| The
Red King
- The bad guy is oh so bad and the good guy has a few character flaws as well.
A wonderful story of good verses evil. Probably my favourite book for this age
group. |
| Tomorrow
When The War Began -
Australia is invaded & a group of Aussie teens are fighting back. A gripping
read. |
| |
|
Holes
- a wonderfully written tale of family curse, misfortune
and eventual triumph against the odds. The book is written
with a wonderful interplay between the past and the
modern day. This is a definite favourite of mine.

| Secrets
of Droon -
Ahhh... the magical world in the basement that needs three children to battle
the evil overlord. If you are into princesses, wizards and trolls with a bit of
tyranny thrown in, this one is for you. |
| Eragon
& Eldest - What can I saw? Eragon is a medieval hero's journey filled
with dragons, noble deeds, evil overlords, sorcerers, a princess and a farm boy
turned legendary dragon rider. Great stuff. |

| Tales
from Shakespeare-
Will is oh so often killed in classrooms. This graphic novel introduces the plots
to several of the well known plays in a fun way. A great addition to the class
library. |
| The
New Way Things Work
- I love having books on how stuff works in the classroom as often the kids (&
adults for that matter) just take the workings of machines for granted. NB I also
love having them pull old machines apart to see what is in them. |
| Artemis
Fowl: The Graphic Novel
- Artimus is a child genius who is actually a criminal. This book leads to great
discussion about point of view in writing. Also, the story is filled with fairy
gold, imaginary worlds and the writer has a nice sense of humour. |
| The
Iron Man
- a mysterious metal eating giant befriends a small boy and then a massive dark
visitor comes from space wishing to devour the earth. A contest ensues. Some nice
insights into the human condition in this one. NB this book is quite different
from the animated movie 'The Iron Giant' though similar. A nice one to compare
the movie and the book. |
| Sadako
- I read this book to my class every year on World Hiroshima Day. Still brings
a tear to my eye each time. "This
is our cry, This is our prayer, Peace in the world" |

as well as providing some excellent insight into legacy
